Following five years of design and development work, the successor to the long-running R129 Mercedes-Benz SL arrived at the September 2001 Frankfurt Motor Show. A multi-national project, the new R230 SL evolved from hundreds of draft sketches submitted by 10 designers from Germany, California, and Japan, followed by traditional 1:4 scale models, mostly in clay, followed by state-of-the-art computer processing technology referred to as the "CAVE" (Computer Aided Virtual Environment). In 2006, facelifted SL models arrived, first shown at the March 2006 Geneva Motor Show.

This late-production R230-generation 2008 Mercedes-Benz SL550 is a very attractively styled example that was produced in June 2007, shortly before the second R230 facelift that took effect in 2008.
