Internally coded "Technical Project 7," the Porsche 911 began with sketches by Ferdinand A. "Butzi" Porsche in 1959 predicting a larger, more comfortable and powerful successor to the long running 356. A new 2.0-liter six-cylinder engine was designed, tested, and developed under Ferdinand Piech, utilizing the lessons learned from Porsche’s Formula One program. Testing commenced in November 1962 at Porsche’s new Weissach test facility. The following September, the all-new "901" debuted at Frankfurt Motor Show. Following Peugeot's objections, claiming it alone held the legal rights to all three-digit numeric car names with zeroes in the middle, a simple change heralded the "911" model designation. Production commenced in September 1964, and the new Porsche went on to immense commercial and racing success. 
 
The high-performance 911 "S" or "Super" debuted for the 1967 model year and benefited from the many lessons learned in competition, quickly giving rise to lightweight racing variants that dominated their respective classes. Top-speed performance neared 140 miles per hour.
